Forest Calendar: November

koks

The first month of winter has begun with the long-awaited first snow cover on the ground. This year, we experienced the first frost and snowfall as late as the end of November. Daylight period is very short in November. The shortage of light is a major factor contributing to the hibernation of terrestrial parts of trees, while hibernation of underground parts of trees is facilitated by temperature drop. That is why we experience a strange situation in warmer autumns - tree trunks and branches are already in winter sleep, while roots still remain active.

The landscape is becoming increasingly greyish and homogeneous. There are still some greener spots to be found in forest - these are evergreen plants, including mosses that continue to grow slowly on tree trunks and fallen trees, without interrupting the process of photosynthesis.

Watch this short film to learn about other things taking place in the forest in July - the hottest month of the year!
