Award Ceremony of the Contest “Our Little Hike 2016” Was Held in Tērvete

The  Ministry of Agriculture in co-operation with JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” (LVM) and society “Zaļās mājas” (Green Houses) organized the annual competition "Mūsu mazais pārgājiens 2016" (“Our Little Hike 2016”) and the winners were honoured in the closing event at the Nature Park in Tērvete. In the 10th anniversary of the competition, the participants had to evaluate the good qualities of wood and the wide range of its use.

Almost 200 students from different cities, municipalities and educational institutions of Latvia gathered in the forest full of fairytales. Ēriks Hānbergs, publicist, writer, and the Chairman of the Jury, Arvīds Ozols, Director of the Forest Department of the  Ministry of Agriculture, and Uldis Grīnfelds, representative of the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry congratulated the students for their perseverance and curiosity.

When the awards were presented, to test their practical and theoretical skills all participants visited the forest fairytale characters – Forest Witch, Dwarfs Family, the energetic hare - who had prepared erudition tests about wood as a sustainable natural resource.

Students of general education and vocational education institutions, interest education groups, and associations participate in this contest each year. This year’s main goal of the contest was to carry out a study about the wide range of wood use in Latvia and the world, according to the contest slogan – “Wood is Everywhere!”.

140 team works were sent in for the contest: 42 works competed in 1st-4th class-group; in the 5th-9th class-group 38 works were sent in, whereas in high school and vocational education group there were 9 works. 51 applications were submitted by interest education groups and associations. Works were assessed by Ēriks Hānbergs, Chairman of the Jury, Natālija Buile, Senior Referent of the State Education Centre,  Māra Mīkule, representative of the Forest Department of the Ministry of Agriculture,  and Ieva Erele, Executive Assistant of the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry.
