Evergreen Latvia

On the November 18 (1918) Independence Day, every resident and guest of Latvia were invited to enjoy its wilderness by visiting one of 350 forest recreation areas set up by JSC “Latvian State Forests” (Latvijas Valsts meži, LVM), and by attending patriotic holiday concerts and other events in regions and towns, including the “Staro Riga” Festival of Light. In honoring Latvian treasures like literature, language, book publishing, the importance of libraries and the new generation – with support from LVM, a special children's greeting was prepared.

Latvia has been headed by a total of nine prime ministers – acclaimed and condemned, skilled and successful, steadfast and erudite - all united as one in their devotion to Latvia.

As always, the “Latvian State Forests” staff relayed its well wishes to Latvia on its birthday - good fortune and evergeen life.

We are proud of Latvia and its “green gold”, therefore, we work with a great sense of responsibility and innovation to make sure that the coming generations – our children and grandchildren – are proud of our work and achievement, finding growth opportunities and aspects uplifting in our own country, instead of abroad. Today, LVM manages state forest territories according to sustainable and responsible forestry principles, also paying attention to recreational needs and nature protection requirements. 16 years have passed since the company was founded, however, by managing wooded territories, we are trying to provide trees with as favorable growing conditions as possible. If we were to reveal the life story of a 97-year-old pine-tree, according to modern management principles, it would sound like this: as a tiny pine seedling, cultivated in the company's modern tree nurseries, it is planted in a previously-prepared soil in a forest clearing; soon the seedling is taken care of by freeing it from weeds, but later on – from other trees growing too close, competing for nutrients and necessary sun beams. So, this tree grows and matures in Latvian state forests, enriching our environment with clean air and beautiful scenery, ensuring refuge and nutrients for many forest creatures. Once planted from a tiny seed, but, with skilled care, it will keep growing for a long time, acquiring an entirely new shape.
