First forestry service providers receive certificates

To improve service quality, raise knowledge among service providers and increase competitiveness, the first cooperation partners of JSC Latvia’s State Forests (LVM) have completed the final test at Ogre State Technical College, receiving certificates in “Forest Regeneration and Tending”.

The required knowledge is gained through studying materials on the Internet. The final test is taken at an education institution after the completion of the study programme. A certificate and diploma, confirming completion, are handed out afterwards. Imants Bricis, who has also received a lumberjack's certificate in Ogre and is now working in Renc?ni, has considerable practical knowledge and many years of experience under his belt. He believes that it is important to know the basics of forestry. According to Bricis, he was delighted to learn many new things while preparing for the final test. Sometimes, competitions are won by those who are not familiar with the most basic aspects of forestry, resulting in timber that does not meet requirements.

All certificate recipients were congratulated by LVM Silviculture Executive Director Edmunds Linde. Such educational events were also in the form of seminars for several years, since many service providers did not have a forestry education. Finally, it was decided that a specifically-designed study program would provide deeper and more thorough knowledge. Its exam questions were drafted in cooperation with Ogre State Technical College and Forest and Wood Products Research and Development Institute.

Linde also extends an invitation for other service providers to apply for studies, since those with certificates will be prioritized during the company’s next procurement. LVM is interested in signing short-term contracts with people who are familiar with forestry processes. Service providers will also benefit from this, since they will be able to gradually acquire knowledge in other areas, guaranteeing work for the entire year. Additional information on the company’s professional development program, matching its requirements, and applications can be found on the homepages of Ogre State Technical College (www.ovt.lv) and the Forest and Wood Products Research and Development Institute (www.e-koks.lv)
