Work in progress to clean up snow and ice damage in state forests

At the moment, work is in progress in forests managed by JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” to deal with year-end snow and ice damage.

In early December, lasting rain was followed by sub-zero temperatures and ice formed on tree branches, bending young deciduous stands, middle-aged trees, pines of all ages and damaging approximately 200,000 cubic meters of timber.

JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” Northern Latgale Forestry Executive Director Viktors Reblis: “Practically all tree species suffered damage, especially middle-aged birch stands. Therefore, we will have to make considerable adjustments to our plans on tending young forest stands, since a part of them will be processed in sanitation cuttings and will not be tended.”

To prevent pests from multiplying in large numbers, until the beginning of summer the damaged timber will be removed from the areas most affected.
