Forest Roads Investments Reaps Reward

To further preserve fast growth rate and to secure its competitiveness in the future, JSC "Latvijas Valsts Meži" has been building and improving forest roads since 2002 in order to increase visitor numbers and secure its popularity in the future..Despite a significant rise in the price of fuel the cost of many forest works has not increased and some  have even gone down. For instance, the cost of felling and the transport of timber  per 1 cub.m will to be lower because the  average distance of delivery has gone down from 457 m (in 2004) to 430 m (in 2006).

And the  new roads make fire control simpler and faster.

At present, JSC "Latvijas Valsts Meži" plans to construct or repair 711 km of  forest roads;specifically to construct 259.3 km of new forest roads and reconstruct 451.5 km of the existing forest roads and they are  preparing construction projects for 808 km of new forest roads for 2007, to maintain  7 bridges and ensure their load carrying capacity, and to improve 13.3 thousand hectares of the forest.. All this works will be done by a new structural unit of the enterprise “LVM Meža Infrastruktūra”.
