STRENCI NURSERY SPRUCE SOWING STARTED

At the end of March, employees of the structural unit “LSF Seeds and Plants” of the JSC “Latvian State Forests” have begun sowing spruce seedlings in the modern, heated Strenci nursery greenhouses.

Two modern greenhouses, whose total space is 2,500m2 are equipped with a carbon dioxide (CO2) regulation system that stimulates quicker growth of plants. This allows growing spruce seedlings quicker. It will be possible to plant frame plants started now already in May next year (for comparison – when using the old technology the spruce seedlings had to be cultivated for four years). In total there has been 50,000 LVL invested in the modernization of these greenhouses. JSC “Latvian state forests” employees plan to start sowing pine seedlings in the middle of April.

Deputy Director of production of the structural unit “LSF Seeds and Plants” Laima Zvejniece stated that ”Particularly, the cool spring of this year makes it easy to see what returns the investment in the modernization of greenhouses will bring. It is now possible to operate more successfully and be independent from adverse weather thanks to the improvements.”

JSC “Latvian State Forests” plans to offer 36 million seedlings to the market this year, and is planning to increase the total amount of seedlings to 100 million by the end of this year. It is also planning to finish construction of a wood plant storage and sorting complex in order to offer higher quality plants in timeframes demanded by customers to increase value of wood.

Chairman of the JSC “Latvian State Forests” board Roberts Stripnieks: ”Larger volumes of seedlings sold from nurseries allow eliminating bottlenecks in the production period. I hope all purchasers of our plants will agree.”
