In autumn, animals of different species become more active – they are intensively looking for suitable food sources to accumulate food reserves in the body for the winter.

Many of the animals, especially careless young animals, cross roads in search of food and die in car collisions. In turn, dead animals attract various species of birds to the roads, which feed on dead animals and often become victims of collisions themselves.

Thus, two adult lesser spotted eagles were injured in a collision with cars, and were taken to the wild bird rehabilitation station established at the property of a senior environmental expert of JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” (LVM).

“This lesser spotted eagle, which was ringed in 2018 and has not yet fully grown, was found to be badly hit in a collision with cars near Lejasciems, by the side of the road, about two weeks ago. During these two weeks, the bird has recovered and was released into the wild,” says LVM Senior Environmental Expert Uģis Bergmanis.

The bird rehabilitation station was built in 2014 at the expense of domestic and foreign donors. Golden eagles, white-tailed eagles and lesser spotted eagles, ospreys, northern goshawks, common buzzards, owls and black storks have regained their strength at the station. Thanks to all the supporters of the establishment of the station and those who found and reported the birds!
