This summer, a laboratory of the Subsurface Unit of JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM) was opened in Salaspils. The aim of the laboratory is to increase the competitiveness of the company in the field of subterranean depths, by testing not only mineral materials acquired at mineral extraction sites, but also the quality of building materials used at forest infrastructure construction sites.

On 14 and 15 November 2018, the State Agency “Latvian National Accreditation Bureau” (LATAK) carried out the initial assessment procedure of LVM Subsurface Testing and Research Laboratory (LVM Subsurface Laboratory). It was concluded that LVM Subsurface Laboratory has fulfilled the requirements of Cabinet Regulation No. 1059 of 16 December 2008 “Regulation on the Evaluation, Accreditation and Supervision of Conformity Assessment Bodies”, and the Laboratory on 10 December 2018 was granted accreditation for compliance with the requirements of standard LVS EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017 “General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories” in the unregulated accreditation area - sampling, physical, mechanical and chemical testing of mineral materials.

LVM Subsurface Laboratory performs sampling of mineral materials and their mixtures in its accredited sphere, determines the granulometric composition, Los Angeles Coefficient, proctor density and filtration coefficient, water absorption, percentage of crushed or broken and completely rounded particles and Methylene Blue Value.

Accreditation is certification by a national accreditation body of the competence of a conformity assessment body and its ability to perform specific conformity assessment activities. Accreditation is an independent assessment by a third party. Consequently, accreditation confirms that the laboratory is competent and capable of testing according to specific test methods. The scope of the accredited activity is defined in the appendix to the accreditation certificate of each conformity assessment body.

In Latvia, accreditation functions are performed by the State Agency “Latvian National Accreditation Bureau”. Information on conformity assessment bodies accredited in Latvia is available on the LATAK website.

So far, the laboratory has already carried out more than 500 mineral material tests; however, currently the laboratory provides internal services only for the needs of the company for the specific LVM business directions. In 2019, it is planned to gradually start providing laboratory services to other interested parties as well.
