“BILLIE” SPARES FORESTS IN LATVIA

The fierce storm, given the name “Billie” in its early stage, spared the forests of Latvia last week – despite the fact that wind velocity reached 35 kilometers per hour, damage was minimal.

After inspecting the forests affected by the storm, "Latvian State Forests" regional forest site employees, planners, and logging experts detected only random trees downed – in West Vidzeme and South Kurzeme forestries about 5,000 km3, in Zemgale and Vidusdaugava – 1,000 km3. In order to preserve the quality of timber, planners are efficiently preparing sanitary clearings.
