In mid-February, Edmunds Beļskis, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM), met with Dr. Volker Wissing, German Minister for Digital Infrastructure and Transport, to share their experience of modern and sustainable forestry processes.

During the meeting, effective resource management was discussed; participants also touched upon topics such as the readiness for future challenges related to the traceability of wood origin, CO2 sequestration.

“The German delegation showed great interest in the geospatial information technology platform developed by JSC “Latvia's State Forests” LVM GEO, the wide range of opportunities of which allows you to improve the work efficiency not only in forestry, but also in companies of many other sectors. For example, in 2022, 70 000 digital geospatial tasks were sent through the LVM GEO platform, thus saving time and other resources, and ensuring the accuracy of the information. Equally important is the opportunities created by LVM GEO in the context of climate change since the LVM GEO platform allows you to calculate CO2 accumulated in each forest area,” said Edmunds Beļskis, Chairman of the LVM Supervisory Board.

During the meeting, an agreement was reached on the experience exchange visits by representatives of forest owners of both countries, as well as the potential cooperation in digitization projects.

Florian Schroeder, Head of the German – Baltic Chamber of Commerce, said that the five-day visit of Dr. Volker Wissing to Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia was dedicated to deepening cooperation in the digital field between Germany and the Baltic States. During his visit, Minister Wissing met with ministers of the relevant areas of the Baltic States, as well as with the leading entrepreneurs to gain a personal overview of the innovations developed and to promote cooperation.
