Three Happiness Tree Parks have been Created as Part of the World Clean-up

Encouraging Latvian residents to think and take care of the environment and clean forests, on 17 September, when the World Clean-up was held in Latvia, the tree sowing and planting campaign “Trees of Happiness” took place. This year, three Happiness Tree Parks have been created: in Trapene in Smiltene Municipality, Viļāni in Rēzekne Municipality and in Krāslava.

The aim of the Trees of Happiness campaign is to create a sense of responsibility for nature conservation in children and young people – to create a deeper understanding of natural processes by taking care of growing a particular tree, to strengthen the international image of Latvia as a green, sustainable, and environmentally responsible country, as well as to promote a more active public involvement in solving environmental issues on a local and global scale.

Līga Abizāre, LVM Environmental Education Manager: “We are pleased that for the third year in a row we can provide our support in the creation of Happiness Tree Parks. Trees and forests are the core values of our country, so we are happy that local governments are taking care of Latvia being green. Every tree planted is an asset that makes our environment healthier. Therefore, we are glad that we have a tradition in Latvia where people are encouraged to plant a tree to take care of people's well-being in the long term!”

Vita Jaunzeme, the leader of the Great Clean-up: “It is a real pleasure that the campaign of sowing and planting trees of happiness, as well as the creation of parks, has become an important tradition in Latvia. Regardless of whether we are talking about a less populated place or a city, it is important for everyone to have a green area near their home where they can experience the beauty and peace of nature. That's why I encourage everyone, in the yard of their house or in a place coordinated by the municipality to join the campaign – to sow or plant their own tree of happiness and strength, to celebrate together and make Latvia green!”

Since 2020, as part of the World Clean-up, Happiness Tree Parks have been created in Latvia with the aim of beautifying and greening populated areas, creating a place for people to plant trees, as well as contributing to the restoration of the balance of the Latvian and global ecosystem. The first Happiness Tree Park was created in Valdemārpils in 2020; last year it was created in Jelgava.
