The Embassy of Latvia's State Forests to Host the Day of Mushrooms

senu diena

Forests are now full of mushrooms and mushroom-pickers. In honour of one of the most popular outdoor activities in Latvia - mushroom picking, the Embassy of Latvia's State Forests in cooperation with the Latvian Museum of Nature invites you to the Day of Mushrooms that is to take place on 5 September.

Mushrooms - both edible and poisonous - will be the main heroes of this educationally entertaining event.

Throughout the day, the Embassy of Latvia's State Forests will give an opportunity to get inspired by watching a film about mushrooms in Latvia and get acquainted with the informative materials issued by LVM, which tell about active and safe outdoor recreation.

At 17.00, mycologists of the Latvian Museum of Natural History Inita Dāniele and Diāna Meiere will give a presentation on the most popular edible and poisonous mushrooms in Latvia. Thereafter, there will be time for discussions and consultations.

Visitors will have an opportunity to see a mini exhibition of the mushrooms found in the very morning of the Day of Mushrooms.

The world of mushrooms is a diverse, species-rich kingdom of living organisms. Well over four thousand species of mushrooms have been identified in Latvia. Almost half a thousand of the mushroom species living in Latvia are recognized as edible, but an average mushroom picker usually picks only a few dozen of species of mushrooms. It is better to be completely sure about what is put in your mushroom basket! However, if curiosity prevails and you want to learn more about mushrooms that you have found in the forest, take them along to the Day of Mushrooms in the Embassy of Latvia's State Forests.

The Embassy of Latvia's State Forests is located in Riga, 1 Vaiņodes Street. On the Day of Mushrooms, the Embassy will be open from 10am until the last visitor and question. Free parking is available for guests.
