The Vanema Forest District was recognized as the best among 12 districtd. “Our district was nominated in the category Green Thinking Leader by Strazde rural municipality. Talsi Region’s commission of judges arrived and we headed out to forests. I spoke about the activities of JSC Latvia’s State Forests, showed how we regenerate them, tend young forest stands, and the latest technologies at our disposal. I also explained the requirements that must be observed, for example, when using biological oils. Later on, the commission left to visit other nominees. The Northern Kurzeme Forestry now proudly bears a plaque of honour and we, alongside other winners, will visit the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, Latgale ceramists, the Līvani Glass Factory and the town of Lielvārde,” said Naglis.
300 guests arrived for the competition’s closing ceremony, including Northern Kurzeme Forestry Executive Director Aldis Felts, who received the Vanema Forest District’s award. The winner in the category Green Thinking Leader was selected on the basis of several criteria – green thinking, environmental education, biological management, environmentally-friendly production and eco-products.
On October 19-20, the winners of the competition on the most well-tended town and rural municipality in Talsi Region in 2013 went on a trip along the River Daugava to visit the city of Daugavpils and become familiar with the most beautiful places in Latgale. The commission admits that the number of participants increases each year. 127 locations were visited and evaluated this year, compared to 94 last year. The commission is pleased with residents’ efforts in bringing order to their places of residence, diligence in business development activities and warm welcome.
