LVM Research Study Commissioned to 2010.

Title of the Research Study Commissioned – Adjustment of Forestry to Climate Change

Terms of Reference:

Part 1

  1. Surveying of the potential climate change scenarios for the coming 50-100 years (two or three most realistic ones) from sources of scientific literature, grounded on scientifically sound arguments and assumptions. Describe them, including the list of the advanced assumptions. The degree of detail for the description: Europe→ the Baltic States→ Latvia.
  2. Identify the direct and indirect influencing factors (incl. diseases, pests), laying impact (both, beneficial and adverse) on the further development of commercially important trees species. The commercially important tree species are deemed pine, spruce, birch, common alder and aspen.
  3. Elaborate methods of the study (description and the scope of tasks to be tackled) to evaluate the direct and indirect impact of the influencing factors on the commercially important tree species under each development scenario of the climate change.
  4. Every other month of the project implementation provide for organization of the reporting meetings discussing the project performance and the achieved results.

Part 2

1.      Pursuant to methods formulated over Part 1 of the project, ensure the acquisition and analysis of the required information and data.

2.      Describe the impact of direct and indirect influencing factors on commercially important tree species under each development scenario of the climate change.

3.      Assess for every climate change development scenario and each commercially import tree species the potential activities required for adjustment of the forestry to the climate change and ensuring preservation of the forest resources and rational management thereof.

4.      Every other month of the project implementation provide for organization of the reporting meetings discussing the project performance and the achieved results.

5.      Prepare proposals on further measures to be taken.

6.      Organize a seminar for staff members of LVM.

Deliverables:

Part 1

1.      The climate change development scenarios are assessed.

2.      The direct and indirect influencing factors laying impact on the further development of commercially important tree species are assessed.

3.      Methods of the study have been elaborated.

Part 2

  1. The analysis of the acquired information has been performed according to the methods elaborated.
  2. The impact of direct and indirect influencing factors under each climate change development scenario on the commercially important tree species has been described.
  3. The potential activities required under each scenario and for each tree species for adjustment of the forestry to climate change have been assessed.
  4. Proposals prepared in respect of the further studies required.
  5. Reports prepared on the Project performance and the achieved results.
  6. Seminar organized for the staff members of LVM.
