During a recent biotope training course in Taurene County, environmental specialists of JSC "Latvia's State Forests" (LVM) spotted a deer stuck in a muddy pit of peat outside the territory of state forests. The deer was unable to escape the bog on its own, "so we took things in our hands and dragged it out!" – the report from the specialists states.

"We used LVM specialist Martins Kalnins' belt to pull the deer out of the swamp. We threw the belt around the deer's neck. When the animal was partially out of the pit, we began digging out mud around its legs until we finally managed to pull the animal out. After several minutes, the deer was capable of an upright position and to crouch on its knees, and it even tried getting up. In order to not disturb the animal any longer, we left with hope that it will survive," said LVM senior environment specialist Ugis Bergmanis.

"It seems that the deer was stuck in the peat for a long time, as it took 5 to 10 minutes for the animal to get up following the rescue. Furthermore, the fact that the animal was stuck in a pit that was next to a water source, indicates that the temperature of water and mud was low: +7 to ¬+10 degrees," said Martins Kalnins.

Participating in the deer's rescue mission were Ugis Bergmanis, Kaspars Liepins, and Martins Kalnins, with aid from LVM scholarship holders Andris Avotins and Nature Conservation Agency geologist Dainis Ozols.
