A Forest Fire Period is in Force in Latvia as of the Start of May

Starting from 2 May, the State Forest Service has set a forest fire period throughout the territory of Latvia. JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM) calls on nature friends and holidaymakers to act responsibly in the forest and to comply with the requirements of fire safety regulations.

As the weather gets warmer and drier, the fire risk in the forest increases significantly. Deliberate, unintentional or careless handling of fire is the most common cause of forest fires.

In forests and marshes, it is prohibited to:

  • Drop burning or smouldering matches, cigarette butts or other items;
  • Make fires (except in specially arranged sites, which prevent fire from spreading outside) or leave them unattended;
  • Burn waste;
  • Drive motor vehicles in forests and marshes off the road;
  • Perform any other activities that may cause a fire.
  • If you notice a forest fire, call the emergency service 112 or the State Forest Service immediately, indicating the location as accurately as possible!

    JSC “Latvia's State Forests” informs that fire risk will remain high in some specially protected nature territories this year, taking into account the fact that infrastructure reconstruction works essential for extinguishing forest fires are not coordinated; this would allow forest fires to be reached as quickly and efficiently as possible.

    This year, the State Forest Service has already registered 83 forest fires with a total forest area of 100.1 ha affected by the fire, of which 42.1 ha are covered by young stands. Since the beginning of the year, 23 forest fires have broken out in the territory managed by JSC “Latvia's State Forests”, damaging 8.7 ha of forest land.
