In order to promote students' growth and education in forest management and related industries, JSC “Latvia's State Forests” (LVM) also this year announces a scholarship competition in the following areas: forest ecology, forest management, environmental education, use of forest biomass in the production of innovative products and subsoil management.

It is an opportunity to increase students' motivation to develop their skills and abilities. The LVM scholarship not only provides financial support, but also offers an opportunity to get to know the forest industry in general, gain insight into LVM's activities, cooperate with forest industry professionals, create and implement new ideas.

This year, students have an opportunity to enter the competition by writing a short essay or preparing a video on the topic “My Vision of ... (field applied for)”.

The scholarship programme, which LVM has been offering since 2007, is not only a monetary benefit, it is also a practical opportunity to get to know the industry together with a mentor, who will provide support in matters related to the field and practical work. The best applicant will receive the LVM Scholarship Award and one-off scholarship in the amount of 300 euros.

“The forest scholarship allows university students not only to look into the forest industry and the company's operations, but also to gain support in the implementation of their bold and innovative ideas. Bringing innovation to life requires courage, the ability to evaluate things and analyse. Today, students are target-minded, often seeing their place in the already chosen field. Our goal is to attract students who would be ambassadors in their community, surroundings and dispel myths about forest management and focus on the possibilities of using wood biomass,” says Indulis Brauners, LVM Research Manager, who has been involved in the LVM Forest Scholarship Programme from the very beginning and has been a mentor to almost ten fellows.

Since LVM has been awarding the prize for the best scholarship theses, the students led by Indulis are the ones who have received them all.

“The winners of previous years' scholarships prove in their work that forest is not just a tree and that LVM is not only a forest industry company, but its activities are affected by the competitiveness, level of development, etc. of many other industries and infrastructure elements managed by them. The sectors are interconnected, complementing each other, thus ensuring an increase in competitiveness and added value in each of the sectors involved. This scholarship programme and students are an example of the fact that even a student in a seemingly unrelated field, who, for example, studies optical cables but spends his or her free time in forest picking berries, can come up with wonderful ideas on how to contribute to the development of the forest industry,” tells  Indulis Brauners.
