Within the national campaign “Oxygen” focussing on sowing and planting trees in the whole country, about 35 000 school children from 700 schools of Latvia, several thousand private persons as well as many representatives from companies and organizations have sown already over 2 million pine and spruce trees. At the end of July, in the Province of Luxembourg, Belgium the European Logging Championship was held. In team rankings, in the competition of 10 teams, the Latvian National Team conclusively ranked third, just a little lagging behind the champion and the runner-up teams: Estonia and Germany. Over the first 6 months of 2009, AS “Latvijas valsts meži” has carried out forest regeneration in the area of 10.7 thousand ha (forest planting, sowing and enhancing of natural regeneration). Agro-technological tending of the previously regenerated areas in the amount of 0.6 thousand ha has also taken place over this period and 5.9 thousand ha of the young stands have been tended. Finally, the moment all fishermen have been waiting for is here: 1st May was the starting day for fishing from the boat, including fishing in the lakes managed by AS Latvijas valsts meži (LVM): Lake Kaņiera, Lake Zebrus, Lake Lielauces and Lake Gulbju. The only fishing site which requires a little waiting is the Tērvete Reservoir, where the fishing season will open in a month. These water bodies offer every prospect of a good catch, as the lakes managed by LVM not only provide fishing opportunities, but also have had their fish stock supplemented on a regular basis since 2002. During these past years, three million pike larvae, 20 thousand of young eels, 40 thousand of young pike perches, 10 thousand of annual pike perches and 10 thousand of one-year pickerels have been released into LVM lakes. It seems that this wood would be mainly destinated to packaging industry, paper industry and wood energy. On Saturday, 25 October, the second cartoon show Mammadaba Multi Rīts was held at cinema Rīga. The show featured several animated cartoons directed by Nils Skapāns, as well as some characters created by Animācijas Brigāde film studio. Several minutes before the start of the show, the ticket office area was still filled with both big and small cinema-goers queuing up to the entrance door. During Lielā Talka (clean-up day in Latvia), which was organized under the motto "A clean and green country – a present given to Latvia on the 90th anniversary” more than 260000 garbage bags were collected according to information received from waste managing companies and waste polygons. It is three times bigger than amount calculated on September 13, 2008. The first calculation was based on reports sent by local coordinators. The Latvijas Valsts Meži joint-stock company has summarised the provisional information on the damage caused by the last storm. According to current data about 200 000 m3 of wood might have been damaged and felled. Woods in Southern Kurzeme and Zemgale suffered the most; however the forestry in Southern Latgale and Northen Kurzeme experienced damage too. In contrast to the storm in 2005 this time the trees have mostly been damaged but not felled. Large fishes are caught in the Gulbji Reservoir of Tērvete, which is managed by the company "Latvijas valsts meži". Thus on 15 May at 12.30 o'clock the fisherman Dagnis Balodis using a wobbler caught a 71 cm long and 12,1 kg heavy carp by the dam. Read more... |

Together two pikes of 9 kg weight were caught with an angling rod in the Kaņieris Lake this month. On 4 May Sergejs Bondarenko managed to catch a pike of 9.15 kg weight, and on 15 May Ilmārs Barkovskis caught a pike weighing 9.0 kg. It is worth mentioning that Ilmārs, who is an enthusiastic fisherman, is also an eager supporter of nature protection; therefore after photographing his big catch he carefully let it back in the lake. Also in the previous year Ilmārs let a pike of 6 kg back in the lake. Who knows – maybe this was the same pike. Read more... |
